Well how about that weather! The snow came early this year and put a halt to our golfers for a couple of days. As a standard, when the snow comes and the course is closed, we at Bill Mattick's Restaurant will also close from Monday to Thursday and the weekends will be condensed to opening times of 11 am to 3 or 4 pm. It is always a good idea to give us a call if you see the white blanket covering our greens! Our direct number is 658 - 4271. If no one answers you can bet we are closed.

"Click the party hat for
more information!"

We are in full swing of the Christmas party season so be aware that every weekend until December 18th, we may be closed for a private function. Speaking of parties....how about New Year's Eve! We've got a special night planned with dancing, great music, noise makers and a glass of good champagne. Please contact us at the restaurant if you can attend. We have extended the RSVP for those of you last minute planners. It's going to be a great debut.

Thanks again for a great year. It's always nice to see familiar faces and get to know the new ones. Let us make our restaurant your home.

Santa's favourite time of year has come and before your shopping list is done make sure you stop by the shop at Cordova Bay. We have items to make any golfer's Christmas Day!

From technical shirts to keep you dry and cool, to rainwear that you could wear in a pool! Ladies down vests to keep you warm, and jackets to get through winter's worst storm.

Still need a present and clothing won't do? Try a gift certificate for a lesson or two. How about a round of golf or a range key, these will be highlights under the Christmas tree!

We wish you a Happy Holiday Season and hope that the snow doesn't keep us away. But if this December ends up being white, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!!!

(In conjunction with our Audubon Certification, we are pleased to share with you short feature each month on the numerous resident birds you will encounter when golfing here @ CBGC. This month, we bring you the Ring-Necked Pheasant)

Ring-Necked Pheasant
Phasianus colchicus

Length 21"
Wing Span 31"
Weight 2.5 lbs

Recently we have had a visitor at the golf course and he seems to have made himself at home. He is a beautiful Ring-Necked Pheasant. He was first spotted on the edge of the creek near the 10th tee. Lately he has been visiting us at the maintenance building. First he made himself comfortable on my car, and then he began hanging out in our plant holding area. He likes to hide out in the bamboo by the 17th pond. It seems that he is going to stick around and make the course his home. Hopefully a female or two will join him.

Ring-Necked Pheasants are larger than chickens and they have a long pointed tail. Males are much more striking than the females. Males have distinctive mottled brown plumage, flashy red eye patches, with a head that ranges in colour from brilliant green to purple hue. Females are mottled sandy brown, with a shorter tail, and they are often smaller.

Pheasant's native range is Asia. However they have been imported and released all over North America. They were originally imported so they could be hunted. Pheasants prefer farmlands, pastures, and grassy woodland edges. In spring they eat mostly a plant-based diet including wild berries, pine seeds, acorns, grains, and weed seeds. They will also feed on insects and sometimes snails. The adults are not long-lived birds. Males usually live for about 10 months and females 20 months.

Ring-Necked are polygamous and one male will mate with as many as 12 hens. Males establish large territories, which they will defend through vicious fighting with other males. Females nest on the ground in a shallow natural depression in grasses, hedgerows, grain fields or ditches. Nests are lined with grass and weeds. Sometimes two hens will lay eggs in the same nest. Up to 15 olive brown eggs are laid with incubation lasting 23-25 days by the female. Upon hatching young will leave the nest permanently and begin to feed on protein rich insects. They stay with mom for 6-7 weeks for protection and help finding food.

Hopefully our new friend will get himself a harem of ladies and we will have pheasants all around. Until this happens keep your eyes peeled for this beauty around #10-18 ponds and creek edges as well as the maintenance shop.

Happy Golfing and Merry Christmas!!!

(Nellie Harrington is pleased to bring you this month's feature flower/plant that is located here @ Cordova Bay with some tips and tricks on how to grow them)

Skimmia Fortune
Skimmia reevesiana

Zones:
4-9 & 14-22

Skimmias are a dwarf mounding evergreen shrub. They are slow growing and are compact. They may reach height of two feet.

The glossy green leaves are a perfect shape. Pinkish buds open to tiny white flowers in April and May. Although the flowers are small, they release the most beautiful fragrance. Once the flowers are finished blooming, a crimson fruit appears.

Most of the early introduction, Skimmias needed to have a male and female plant for pollination to produce berries. This is not the case for Skimmia Reevesiana, it is a self-pollinating plant. Skimmias require light to moderate shade. Too much shade will make the plant stretch out, reaching for light.

We have some very nice specimens located in Mattick's Farm, near the medical office of Dr. Vaughn. The gardening staff at Cordova Bay would like to wish everyone the best of the season and look forward to bringing you more exciting colours and plants in 2006! Happy Gardening....Nellie!

Victoria golfers don't play snow golf. Even though the recent snowfall was expected it still is a jolt when it comes. A good two inches fell on the Ridge closing the course for that day and next.

We re-opened on 2 days later, but the afternoon brought more snow and colder weather forcing another closure.

Conditions improved enough to open on the next Sunday and then sunshine was out in full force come Monday morning, a nice way to start the week.

December is a busy time of year for most everyone as the Holiday season approaches. Our only event in December is the Candy Cane Open, a family event which will be held on Sunday Dec. 18th. If you don't get a chance to get out to Cordova Bay before Christmas then we would like to wish you all a very Happy Holiday season and we look forward to serving you again in the New Year.

The Ridge staff would like to acknowledge two special people who applied their trade at the Ridge Course over the past few seasons. Noni Ousey, who was in charge of the Cafe for two years, has moved on to a sales position with the North Douglas Food Systems. Donna Bell, who spent two earlier seasons here at the Ridge before moving to the Bay Course last spring, is moving on as well. Donna will be getting into the accounting field with KPMG, something she specialized in at university. Donna will also be getting married on Dec. 31st in her hometown of Prince George. Noni and Donna were two of the finest employees a company could ask for and we wish them both the very best in their new endeavors.

Have you ever wondered what the soil profile looks like under the tightly shaven greens you putt on each day. When Willie Hall began construction at Cordova Bay Golf Course in 1990, the greens you are putting on today were built using USGA greens specifications. These greens are now fifteen years old and as they mature their properties have changed slightly and regular cultural programs must continue to maintain the properties that provide the desirable playing conditions you enjoy each day. Many factors dictate how our greens will perform under adverse environmental conditions such as extreme heat and drought or cold and rainy weather. How harsh will the winter be we are currently into?

Even in the summer the seemingly perfect conditions of heat and sunshine can bring heavy disease pressures because of the demands we place on our greens. In maintaining them we are very fortunate to have the resources and competent staff to ensure the original USGA constructed greens continue to perform the way they were intended.

A major factor affecting the way greens perform is the particle size range of the sand that makes up between 90 to 100 percent of the greens mix. There must be an accurate blend of particle sizes to allow for the best drainage, water and nutrient retention, pore spaces for air, and a small percentage of organic matter, as pure sand is a very sterile environment to grow grass upon. Following these guidelines closely and ensuring they are maintained is important as the cost of renovating a green is approximately 25,000. There are three primary cultural practices that we perform during the season to ensure the desirable physical property of our greens is maintained. The need to aerate, verticut, and topdress greens is very important in maintaining a firm and smooth putting surface. However, even more importantly, the practices that remove accumulating thatch and organic matter ensure that the conditions present during construction by Willie Hall back in 1990 are preserved.

If the desired physical properties are not maintained on our putting surfaces a gradual decline in turf health and playability will result as the greens will become soft, hold less oxygen for a healthy root system and more moisture to harbor disease organisms.

Our goal at Cordova Bay is to give you "conditions that exceed expectations." If you ever have a question about the maintenance practices you see us performing, please do not hesitate to ask or contact the maintenance department. We would be happy to answer your questions.

Seasons Greetings From Your 2006 Ladies Club Executive!

All of us wish all of you the very best of the holiday season and the New Year! As I write this, snow is coming down a mile a minute, but I am definitely NOT dreaming of a white Christmas!!

As a result of the snow, the golf course has been closed for a couple of days, so Winter Club had to be put on hold this week. However, I see that many of our members are taking advantage of this opportunity to keep their game sharp. And, if you can't make it out during the week, you are invited to join us for Ladies Breakfast Club Golf on Saturday mornings. Tee times from 9:30 - 10:30 and all you need to do is call the pro shop and sign up as a single, pair, foursome, etc.

We are currently in the process of setting the Fixtures (Club Activity) List for the 2006 year. We will have it finalized early in the new year and will circulate it as well as post it in the locker room as soon as it is available. As well as our regular Ladies Days and Interclub Matches (10 matches this year, I believe) we hope you will be able to join us for:

  • March Information Meeting: This is your chance to find out about events this year, sign up for Interclub and renew friendships!
  • New Members Orientation/Nine and Dine: New members learn about the course, meet the executive and other new members.
  • Scramble for Charity: Who will we celebrate this year?
  • June Social: What will the 'theme' be in 2006???
  • Club Championship Weekend including a Friday Registration Event: Be sure to get in your 7 Ladies Day rounds or events so you don't miss this weekend!!!
  • 4th Annual Black and White Tournament: The rivalry continues!
  • Fall AGM: Collect your awards and elect your new executive.

We appreciate your comments and suggestions and welcome your input, so please feel free to contact us. If you are interested in volunteering, (and we can always use a hand!), just let us know and we will gladly contact you! You can email us at info@cordovabaygolf.com or simply leave a note for us at the ProShop.

See you on the course and "Best Wishes" for a wonder-filled golf year from your 2006 Executive Committee (Jane Oliver-Brown, Captain; Connie Dykstra, Vice-Captain; Cathie Keener, Events Chair; Heather Clarke, Events Vice-Chair; Annette Hart, Sports Chair; Jina McCaffree, Secretary; Karen Brown, Social Chair; Lin Neufeld, Treasurer; & Sybil Hurwitz, Handicap Chair
