At this time of year, as a professional staff we often field questions from people as to how they might go about improving in the coming season. Most often, these people are not highly competitive, but it seems most everyone would like to improve. Call it the inner challenge. For many, the challenge to improve is the ultimate draw.
Experience tells me that there is great potential for improvement by challenging one's beliefs on how to play golf. The "how to play golf" includes examining beliefs of how to swing the club, how to execute a chip shot, how to blast from the bunker, and how to build a repeatable putting stroke. However, the traditional "buts and bolts" instruction only scratches the surface of where a capable coach will lead you. Your beliefs are constantly challenged during a round of golf, with each shot that you face presenting a unique circumstance. Often, the shot is from an uneven lie, with the ball sitting down, up, or somewhere in between. Your beliefs as to how to approach each situation are tested every time. Sometimes, you may not be aware of how many choices may be available to you for a given scenario.
Here's a quick example. Your ball lies 45 yards from the flagstick, but only 15 yards from the front edge of the green. There's a bunker between you and the green, with a small lip. The flagstick is on the top level of a two-tiered green. The ball is somewhat down in the long, wet grass in the rough, and it's on a sidehill. What influence will that have? The questions continue. Chipping or putting stroke? How much loft do I need to clear the bunker? Where should I land the ball? How firm is the green? How will that affect the roll-out? How will the particular ball I'm using affect the roll-out? Are the grooves on this "trusty old wedge" going to do anything? Should I have ordered that lob wedge? The answers to these questions, combined with sufficient knowledge of your own strengths and weaknesses, will lead the accomplished player to a logical shot and club selection. The more times you make logical choices for shot and club selection during a round of golf, the better your chances for success. Your training for 2009 will need to include some on-course coaching detailing the process for shot and club selection in various instances.
Meanwhile, the equipment advancements that we saw in the last ten years are over. The manufacturers now have nowhere to go, because the rule-makers have effectively limited the speed the ball can come off the clubface of the driver, and they have limited the size of the driver head, and the length of the shaft. Irons and hybrids and fairway metals are re-hashing old ideas with only minor improvements, most of them cosmetic. The only thing left is whether your clubs fit you and your swing, and whether they are truly a matched set. Lean on your Cordova Bay Professional staff for the "Straight Goods" on the relative fit and matching of whatever is in your bag. Look to the industry and the golf channel for gimmicks and marketing that will lead your game on a long adventure. One final word of caution: DON'T believe the advertisements that trumpet the theory that their engineers have created the wonder club that will account for all your swing inadequacies, allowing EVEN YOU that chance to hit down the fairway, and further, too. Why? You are better than that. If you wonder why good athletes make poor golf swings, come and see one of us on the Cordova Bay staff. We'll help you with your swing motion, and it will be a good start!

Aeration Holes
When a course has been aerated, a Local Rule permitting relief, without penalty, from an aeration hole may be warranted. We will adopt the following Local Rule:
"Through the green, a ball that comes to rest in or on an aeration hole may be lifted without penalty, cleaned and dropped, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green.
On the putting green, a ball that comes to rest in or on an aeration hole may be placed at the nearest spot not nearer the hole that avoids the situation."
PENALTY FOR BREACH OF LOCAL RULE:
Match Play - Loss of hole; Stroke play - Two Strokes
Aeration will be taking place at Cordova Bay following play on March 30 and all day March 31. All Bay course facilities will be closed March 31st only.

Player of the month
Meet Stan Gill. Retired Teacher from Mt. Doug after 36 years, husband to Bobbie, dad to Chris and Sherry, and playing partner for 11 years to Peter Simmonds, Don Puddy, and Doug Critchley. "We like to play for 25 cents a hole. The money won is saved each week and at the end of the year we donate it all to the Victoria Mustard Seed."
When did you start playing golf?
I started playing golf when I retired in 1997. I played casually until I got the golfing bug and soon twice a year became twice a week.
What is your favourite course outside of Victoria?
I really love Sandpiper Golf Resort in Harrison Mills. It is beautiful. On the Island I really like Arbutus Ridge and Storey Creek.
What is your favourite golfing moment or best memory?
Whenever I can manage to scrounge up a birdie that's a good golfing moment. At Cordova Bay I shot 91 for the first time a couple of weeks ago!!
What is your favourite hole at Cordova Bay?
I really like #17 over the water. It is very challenging.
Who is your fantasy foursome?
Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer and Phil Mickelson
What is your favourite golf club in your bag?
My Big Bertha Driver because it is my most consistent.
Lessons learned?
I have learned that you really cannot master this game of golf or any single shot. They can be entirely different everyday!

A View from above

Let me tell you, I thought I had struck gold when I found my way onto the 13th hole, but this heaven thing is a whole new ball game. Upon my arrival I had a little chat with St. Pete to ensure he understood the type of introduction that would befit a rooster of my status. Sure enough angels sang and I was announced as 'Gordie the Great, Official Rooster of Cordova Bay Golf Course.' Well, that sure got the chicks' attention! Last Tuesday I cunningly sprang a few tears and sobbed of how I missed the ladies of Cordova Bay and their deliveries of baked cookies. Now the chicks are baking their hearts out and I am feasting on warm cookies on a daily basis!
Ah well, in all seriousness, I do sneak away each day to part the clouds and keep an eye on my old stomping grounds. I see those bloody geese are back and some of them have the nerve to 'relieve' themselves by my pond on 13. How quickly they forget whose domain that was. Hrundi also seems to be benefiting from my death and has re-instated herself as Head Avian at Cordova Bay. I gotta tell you, I sure don't miss that high pitched squawk of hers. In the human world the maintenance crew are brewing up their compost tea, a real favourite among us feathered types. It sure beats those chemical fertilizers. And then there are all of you, my loyal servants, all readying yourselves for another great golf season. It is good to see the bustle of spring again. Happy golfing to all, and remember...I will be watching you.
Saint Gordie the Great, Former Official Rooster of Cordova Bay Golf Course
