goodbye....love Gordie
To my dearest friends at Cordova Bay Golf Course,
I was out witted at last. I battled through frost, snow, ice, dogs, the odd cougar, racoons, those bloody ducks and geese who kept trying to steal my territory, but I forgot to look skyward for any imminent danger from above. So it is with a sorrowful heart that I must say goodbye to all my human and feathered friends at Cordova Bay Golf Course. That being said, I have heard there are some lovely chickens in heaven, and it has been awhile since I enjoyed 'female company', so I am on my way there now, ready to trade in my 9-minute interval of buffet goodies and days of bachelorhood at Cordova Bay for a hot young chick. I have also heard rumours that they have muffins that are almost as good as the ones Walter makes, so all is not lost. Before I cross that final threshold I want to share a few moments that willl always stand out in my mind. I have already thanked Alastair for his dedication to keeping me well fed and plump during the recent snow storm. There was also the time a German Shepherd snuck onto the golf course with an appetite for rooster. Luckily it was on a Saturday morning around 10:30 so Mohney and Bob Jawl were just rounding the corner to see that my life was in grave danger, clubs drawn and charging, those two men sure showed that dog that I was not the rooster to mess with. Ha! And they say German Shepherds are smart! Then there was Jimmy Goddard, the maintenance crew and the marshals who faithfully oversaw regular deliveries of rooster food to my domain on 13 and the army of golfers who without fail brought me goodies from the kiosk. You will all be held dear in my heart and if you are on the 13th hole and notice your ball mysteriously moving closer to the hole or straightening out of an obvious shank, well, let's just say it is my turn to do something for you.
I gather Hrundi has finally started to feel guilty about how she treated me and looked down on me all these years and is planning a service in my honour. A funeral for a rooster; that'll impress those young chicks in heaven for sure. Now, I don't want any of you to grieve at my passing, which I know will be tough given my obvious charm, smarts and good looks. As for the rest of you, I will be watching you on the golf course. Adios my friends and happy golfing.
Gordie the Great Golden-Laced Wyandotte Rooster
Cock of the Heavens
Gordie has been busy in the great beyond, check out all those
extra feet under his new girl.

remembering gordie
Gordie
One quiet day, we thought you'd gone,
Your call was heard, not just at dawn,
A victim of the eagle's art.
But also when the bankers start.
But always you were there for us,
Entertained us with your pranks.
Perhaps you even heard us curse
When putts were missed or we hit shanks.
You set up shop near 14 tee,
So many moons ago,
And golfers soon were glad to see
You, strutting too and fro.
A rooster of the finest rank,
Your name was wisely chosen,
Gordon Rennie you've to thank,
A name now frozen in time.
In Lear's words, an "elegant fowl",
You brought joy into our game:
And now, no longer will you prowl -
The Bay won't be the same.
Hrundi knows of your demise,
I told her at her cage -
A tear came to her beady eyes,
To hear you'd left the stage.
The Winter storms came harsh and swift,
With frost and snow so deep,
The darkness hardly seemed to lift,
The cold in bones did seep.
You braved those storms and so we thought,
'Another Spring for you',
Now, sadly, all that we have got
Are memories sharp and true.
You had more friends than many men,
And many women too:
We'll never see you ilk again
'Farewell' Gordie and 'Adieu'.

it's pruning time!

As you may have noticed here on the golf course we have started our winter pruning. From November until March is the best time when the trees are dormant. You may ask, why prune? Think of the future health of the tree, to establish a good branch structure and shape. So before you start cutting take a step back and envision what you want your tree to look like when you are finished, and keep doing this with all your cuts.
A good place to start is by removing the suckers, these are new shoots coming off main branches or the trunk that shoots straight up. Then look for any broken or diseased branches (an easy way to remember this is the three "d"'s; disease, damage and decay) and cut them off. You should remove any crossing branches as this is where pests and disease starts. Now look for branches that are growing downward. And finally now is your chance to remove that branch that is in your way. Here at the course we limb our trees quite high so the big rough mower can fit under without damaging any branches and to prevent operators from getting a branch in the face.
Now what not to do. Never remove more than one third of the trees branches. Never top a tree or cut off the trees canopy to reduce its size. It is unattractive and leads to weak growth and decay, thus leading to safety concerns. Avoid leaving too much or too little of a pruned branch. For example, a stub cut is too much and looks like a hook for you to hang your coat. A flush cut is too close and does not heal as nicely.
Remember to start with clean and sharp tools, not all trees need to be pruned and if you are not sure ask for some advice.
Good luck!

winter maintenance
It's nice to feel like the worst is over with regards to the weather. It has been a challenging winter to say the least but the days are now getting longer and with the sunshine we experienced earlier this week the sounds and activities of the birds were a clear sign of spring being just around the corner.
The maintenance department has been busy through the month of January and into February with a number of projects. In response to last seasons feedback from our customers about course changes or improvements, a number of projects are under way.
Winter Pruning is almost complete but there are still a number of evergreens that we will be bringing up their lower branches. This will allow you to find your ball under the tree quite a bit easier.
Once again this winter we have been working on improving the playability of our bunkers and two renovations are now complete. The back bunker on 17 has been improved and 2 of the 3 pot bunkers on 14 are now finished with work beginning next week on the third pot bunker in front of that green. Additional items we will be working on before spring include leveling of irrigation heads to improve sprinkler coverage and aeration and topdressing of select fairway areas to firm up the playing surfaces.
From a maintenance standpoint, our biggest challenge is managing the wear caused by traffic when we have experienced so many frost delays. These heavy frost virtually stop any opportunity for turf growth and recovery which adds to the challenge of providing good playing conditions in the winter months.
We have many programs in place to help the turf through these periods and there are many ways you can aid us in these programs during your game. Ball marks, divots and traffic patterns are the three most challenging areas during winter play. On February 1st we placed our divot bottle program back in full swing and I would encourage everyone to please help us with tee and fairway divots. Replacing divots is our first choice but you will still find many divots in need of repair during your round and your participation in this program will definitely aid in the overall playing condition of our fairways. Fixing ball marks is always important but even more so during the winter months when turf recovery is very slow. Last but not least are the ropes we have placed in certain areas to direct traffic away from wear areas. This is always a challenge and I dislike the look of the ropes on the golf course as much as anyone. When we place them to low, people seem to enjoy the challenge of stepping over them and when placed to high, walking carts can be maneuvered under them. Everyone can help in this area by altering their walking patterns during their round and look forward to making playing conditions as good as they can be. Thank you for all your help.
Sincerely,
Dean and the Maintenance Team
