Introducing ... The Ridge

A month or so ago Cordova Bay Golf Course hosted a round table discussion with some of our public players and members, both past and present.  We do this every few years to make sure we understand where our guests' desires are and what they would really like to see from us. They are always informative, occasionally lively and universally helpful.  And sometimes they throw up surprises that have all of us looking at each other thinking "why didn't we know that!?"

This year was no exception.  We were completely stunned by how little headway we have made in introducing our own community, never mind the golfing community at large, to that fantastic little facility known as "The Ridge".

Discussions went something like this...

Question: "Can you play 18 holes?"   Answer:" Ummm, yeah.  You're second (or third, or fourth, or...) nine is just $8."

Question: "Why can't you go 'round the putting course more than one time?" Answer: "Ummm, the short game pass lasts all day and not only can you putt as much as you want it includes 2 more full chipping and pitching greens plus bunkers and rough. You can even take a break for lunch and come back."

Question: "Who looks after the greens up there, anyway?" Answer: "Ummm, it's the same award winning crew that looks after the greens on the main course."

Question: "Why don't you offer kids camps up there?" Answer: "Ummm, We do. Every year.  There are After School, Spring Break and Summer camps."

And on, and on, and on.  It was painfully evident that we had done a terrible job in highlighting what an active and fantastic facility The Ridge really is.

So .... it's time to correct that.  This week we're going to unhide the gem that is The Ridge.

A Little About The Ridge:

The Ridge Course offers spectacular views of Haro Strait and the San Juan Islands, a 9-hole par 3 course, an 18 hole grass putting course and a short game facility offering silica sand bunkers, swales and two very different types of target greens.

Opened in June 1999, the Ridge Course, like her big sister, the Bay Course across the street, was designed by well known golf course architect, Bill Robinson. The Ridge also shares Cordova Bay’s award winning grounds crew - meaning conditions are always the best they can be.

An excellent place for beginners learning their swing or for scratch golfers honing their craft, we are Victoria’s most complete short game facility.

Pin placement indicators on the Ridge course

I and my regular weekly Ridge group have asked the staff about this repeatedly and are generally told that the staff member will ask someone else about it. We've never received an answer. The issue is the lack of indicators on the flag sticks as to the placement of the hole for the day. On a number of holes the cup can be placed so that you cannot see whether the hole is at the front, middle or back or where it is in relationship to the ridges. Is there a reason for resisting adding a distance indicator flag to the flag stick so that we can have a better chance of judging distance from the tee box?

Pin placement indicators at the Ridge

My goodness, this course is 900 yards long, the greens are small and I might be wrong, but the PGA Tour has yet to schedule an event there.  What ever happened to USING YOUR EYES to judge distance?  While every flagstick is not visible from the tee box, it is visible from another vantage point on the course. Look at the pin on #3 when you are on the first green, look at the pin on #4 when you are on the first tee, look at the pin on #7 when you are on the 5th green, and look at the pin on #8 when you are on the 7th green. The rest of the pins are quite visible from the tee box. In my opinion this little course is an absolute gem, perfectly manicured, well managed, and a great asset to the golfing community.

Pin placements

You must be taller than I am, "Old golfer", if you can see the other pins from the tee boxes, and you're obviously not golfing first thing in the morning when they are moving the pins around as you play. I certainly appreciate your suggestion about "USING YOUR EYES"; I'd probably never thought of that without your gentle guidance. We do enjoy the course each week, and most of the people are very nice there.

The Ridge

One of the best short courses around & like it's big Bay sister, just as beautiful.

Glad to see this wonderful place getting some well deserved extra recognition.
